Engine Oil Change

My Discovery 5 is just approaching 1 year old. When I tried to book its first service I was told it wasn’t due until 2 years old. So this means the original oil will have been in 2 years! I read so many reports of blown engines, metal fragments in the oil etc I find this a bit scary, but then I’m not an engineer. What is the general view of other owners?
