I m thinking of doing an intermediate oil change on my 2017 2.0 diesel. Land Rover will pay for scheduled oil changes which is fine but for well under £50 I could do an intermediate oil change myself to ensure that the dilution is well under 6.1% . Shell Helix 0W30 meets the specification STJLR.03.5007. The filter could be replaced when the official oil change is due. Can anyone see any objection to this?

Why are you doing it? Is the service light on. Didnt think there was a problem with oil dilution on the 2litre
3litre SE. Monticello Red. Electric deployable tow bar.

My car was serviced at 13500 miles. The next oil service was due at 19850 miles. After driving for approximately 2000 miles after this service the car indicated that an oil change was due at 18400 miles. So I felt that something was amiss. Then the In Control app indicated that a service was due. I contacted the dealer and was asked to bring the car in as oil dilution was suspect. Then the In Control app reported no service due!
The dealer said that the oil was diluted by 3% and that this was within the parameters set by Land Rover (7%, they said) so no oil change was necessary. They felt the In Control app message was a fault within the app. The engineer re-set the oil change due to 19850 miles.

I am probably over-reacting but I don't really like the thought that the engine oil is diluted and getting worse. Shell Helix Ultra oil meets the Land Rover specification for this car ST JLR. 03.5007. It is a simple job to extract 5 litres of oil from the car using a pump. If I replace the 5 litres with new oil then the oil dilution should be about 1%. There is no need to change the filter. Land Rover will pay for the following oil change at 19500 miles. I can source the oil for as little as £26 so an economical way of protecting the engine.
