The Discovery Vision concept car (above) which Land Rover showed us back in 2014 tells us that the exterior design of the new Discovery will be very similar to the current Discovery Sport, albeit bigger and slightly more elegant looking. Some fans of the existing model might be upset about the less rugged appearance of the new Discovery, but it will definitely be a better car in every other aspect – and that’s a hard thing to argue against. At least the designers appear to have kept the iconic stepped-up roof that the Discovery has always had, though it looks even more subtle than before.

The new Discovery 5 will also be considerably lighter than before, Using the PLA (‘Premium Lightweight Architecture) of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will enable Land Rover to extract up to half a tonne off the weight of the Discovery 4, whose 2.5-tonne steel bulk has been its Achilles heel for a while now. That should bring significant handling and economy advantages compared to the current model.

Industry experts have speculated that using the light-weight PLA architecture could add up to £7000 to the starting price of the Discovery 5. With the current vehicle available from £41,600 in the UK, this could give a starting price for the Discovery 5 of between £48,000 and £49,000.
