It's the media's first drive in the new LandRover Discovery 5. It's called a prototype car still but the Discovery 5 is close to the finished product.

First impressions off-road and in-water. Happily, first signs are positive. This fifth-generation model, which was unveiled at October's Paris motor show, is lighter, faster, and more economical than the model it replaces, despite being bigger inside and out. It also has better ground clearance and wading ability thanks to some clever engineering.

Auto Car:
What we can tell from our drive is that the Discovery remains pretty much unbeatable off-road. It has a kitchen sink’s worth of Land Rover’s off-road technology at its disposal, including diff locks, a low-range gearbox and the Terrain Response 2 system, which itself incorporates a brilliant new All-Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) function that acts as a low-speed off-road cruise control, taking over the pedals and leaving you to steer.

As impressive as the ATPC system is - its control and reaction times feel better than your own on the really slippy stuff - so is the Discovery’s ability to conquer a rock crawl, both up and down, using most of the 500mm of wheel articulation, or dive nose-first into water close to its 900mm wading depth limit.

On the rest of the purely off-road route, the standard all-weather tyres and height-adjustable air suspension combine with all the electronic trickery to find grip and control over any given surface where there has no right to be any. There is nothing dramatic to report about conquering this terrain, such is the ease with which the Discovery goes over it.

What Car?
We will have to wait for the official launch next February before we give a definitive verdict, but what we can confirm is that the new Land Rover Discovery has lost none of its off-roading prowess. The plethora of new driver aids makes off-road driving less challenging for inexperienced drivers, and the well-appointed and versatile interior takes the stress out of long stints behind the wheel.

Factor in a clever seating configuration, a huge boot and a new infotainment system, and the new Discovery looks like it could become one of the best luxury SUVs available.

Car
The new 2017 Land Rover Discovery 5 has impressed us on first acquaintance. This is a very limited driving experience and we must wait to see how it performs on road until the spring.

This much is clear: it's a very polished performer, one that'll set the cat among the pigeons. We, too, worry it might have strayed too close to its Range Rover Sport brethren - in design, in feel, in execution - and yet the market continues to lap up these cars in droves.

Our prediction? The world will mourn the old Discovery's design - but will love the new-found style, gadgetry and dynamics offered by the replacement. The Disco beat goes on, just remixed for 2017.
